One of the unique forms of the globally popular Haitian art is the Haitian tropical metal wall art. This innovative art form is created by recycling steel oil drums into unique metal sculptures. Haitian steel drum art was born in the early 1950s when a simple blacksmith, Georges Liautaud, in his small workshop started creating primitive metal crosses for the graves in Croix-des-Bouquets cemetery. An American teacher, DeWitt Peters opened the Le Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince and encouraged Georges Liautaud to expand his art to creating metal sculptures. A few talented craftsmen joined him and soon the tradition followed.

Global popular in Haiti a unique form of art is the art of Haitian metal drum. This innovative art form, is to create a unique sculpture of metal recycling into steel drums. 55 gallon Metal drums used for transporting oil and other products are bought near the port in the capitol city of Port au Prince and transferred to the neighboring town of Croix-des-Bouquets which is the center of the Haitian metal works and the workshop of the several master metalwork artists. The rounded ends of the drums are first removed and placed inside the cylinder along with leaves of sugar canes or dried bananas. These drums are then burnt for quite some time to remove the paint or other residue. Once done, the drums are cooled and cut from top to bottom. One of the assistant artists then enters the cylinder and uses his body pressure to open up the drums, which are then pounded severely to produce a long sheet of metal canvas. The design is drawn on the surface of the metal canvas with a chalk and finally using primitive tools like chisels and hammer the design is cut out.

How to make the metal art decor?The process Liautaud used to produce a metal canvas from a recycled oil drum is still the same process used today in Croix-des-Bouquets. The oil drums arrive at Port au Prince where they are purchased and then transported by handcart or on the top of taxis to Croix-des-Bouquets, the center of the Haitian metalwork. There the tops and bottoms are removed from the drums and placed inside the drum cylinders with sugar cane or dried banana. They are then set on fire. The fire removes paint and residue from the drums. Once cooled down, the drums are cut from top to bottom. Climbing inside the drums, the craftsman pushes them open and apart by applying brute force using arms and legs to push. When open enough to climb outside of the drum, the metal is pounded into a flattened metal canvas with a hammer..

Designs are drawn onto the metal with chalk to begin with. They designed a variety of shapes for example,butterfly,fish,gecko,branch,etc.After the design is drawn, the artist uses hammer, chisel, nail and various crude tools to cut the design and shape it. A steel brush is used to clean and smooth the artwork before it is painted. No two pieces are identical, each piece is unique, handcrafted and hand painted.
